Most yoga mats have a bad relationship with sweat. Palms get damp, grip disappears, downward dog becomes a slow slide into the wall. Cork runs the opposite way: the wetter it gets, the harder it holds. That single backwards fact is why cork mats exist, why hot yoga people swear by them, and why we built the RAW collection around actual bark instead of a printed imitation of it.
It is also why "cork or natural rubber?" is one of the most common questions we get, and why the honest answer is a bit annoying: for most mats, it is not a choice between the two. Here is what is actually going on, and how to pick.
First, the thing nobody explains
Almost every serious yoga mat is two layers doing two different jobs.
The base is what keeps the mat welded to the floor. The surface is what keeps you welded to the mat. Natural rubber is the best base material there is: dense, heavy, high friction against wood, tile or concrete. Cork is a surface material. On our GRRR and Sinapsys mats, cork sits on top of a natural rubber base, so you get both.
So when someone asks "cork or natural rubber", they usually mean one of two real questions: should the surface I touch be cork, or something else? Or: should I buy a solid natural rubber mat, where rubber is both base and surface? Both are good questions. They have different answers.
What cork actually is
Cork is the bark of the cork oak, stripped by hand roughly every nine years. The tree is not cut down. It regrows its bark and gets harvested again for a couple of centuries, quietly outliving every mat, every trend and most yoga studios. No felling, no plastic, and the bark itself is renewable and biodegradable.
That makes cork one of the few mat surfaces where the sustainability story is just... true, without asterisks. We like materials that do not need a marketing department to defend them.
What natural rubber actually is
Natural rubber comes from the sap of the rubber tree, tapped rather than felled, which puts it in the same honest category as cork. It is what gives a mat its weight and its refusal to travel across the floor mid-flow.
As a surface, raw natural rubber is sticky-grippy when dry and can get slick once sweat pools on it, which is the opposite problem to cork. It also has a distinct smell when new that fades over a few weeks, and it does not love direct sunlight: UV makes rubber brittle over time. Leave any rubber-based mat baking on a balcony all summer and you will shorten its life.
The backwards grip, explained
Dry cork feels smooth, warm and firm: pleasant, slightly waxy, grippy enough for slow practice. Add moisture and the surface changes character. The cells of the bark contain suberin, a natural waxy substance, and light dampness increases friction instead of killing it.
In practice, the first twenty minutes your hands sit comfortably. When the sweat arrives (vinyasa, hot room, summer in a city apartment) the mat locks in. Some people spray cork mats with water before practice to skip the warm-up phase entirely. That is not a hack, it is just how bark works.
Cork vs natural rubber, head to head
Assuming a natural rubber base in both cases, and comparing what your hands actually land on:

The latex question, since nobody asks it out loud
Natural rubber contains latex proteins. If you have a latex allergy, that matters, and it matters for the base as well as the surface. A cork top does not remove the rubber underneath.
It is a small group of people, but if that is you, the honest advice is to avoid natural rubber mats entirely rather than assume a cork surface solves it. We would rather tell you that than sell you a mat you cannot use.
How cork ages, and the thing people complain about
A cork surface develops a patina. It darkens slightly where your hands and feet land, softens a little, and starts looking like something you actually use rather than something you bought.
Now the honest part. Search around and you will find people saying their cork mat started shedding after a month. That happens, and it is worth understanding why, because it is not random.
Cork is bark, and bark is made of cells. A cheap cork mat uses a thin veneer of coarse granules pressed onto a backing with the minimum binder that will hold. Under repeated abrasion, exactly where you slide a foot forward from downward dog, that thin layer gives up and starts crumbing. Once it opens, it keeps opening.
What prevents it is unglamorous: a denser cork layer, better bonding to the base, and a reinforcing layer between the two. Our GRRR and Sinapsys mats use a reinforced anti-tear mesh inside for exactly this reason, to stop the surface and the base from separating or stretching apart over time.
So if you have read that cork mats fall apart: some do. Ask what is under the cork before you decide the material is the problem.
It does not stink
Cork is naturally antimicrobial. The same suberin that helps grip also makes the surface inhospitable to the bacteria that turn other mats into a smell you apologise for. You still clean it, you are still a mammal, but it stays fresh with a fraction of the effort a foam or TPE surface demands.
This is the single most underrated reason to own one. Grip is what sells a mat. Smell is what makes you stop using it.
Cork vs everything else
Honesty section. Cork is not the answer to every question.
If you want maximum grip from the very first dry touch, a coir-infused or laser-engraved PU surface like our ANIMATES or BREATH mats grips harder at minute zero. If you practice mostly slow, dry styles and never break a sweat, cork's party trick stays unused. Still a great mat, but you are paying for a feature you do not trigger.

So which one should you actually buy
Skip everything above and answer one question: do your hands get damp when you practise?
If yes, cork. The material is designed for exactly that moment, and the smell problem disappears as a bonus.
If no, and you practise slow and dry, a coir-infused surface will feel grippier from the first minute and you will never miss what cork does.
If you practise in a heated room, or you are the kind of person who finishes class with a puddle, go microfibre or cork and do not overthink it.
Care: almost embarrassingly easy
Wipe with a damp cloth or a gentle natural cleaner. Dry in the shade. Do not soak it, do not bake it in direct sun, do not put it anywhere a machine spins. The breathable surface dries fast on its own. That is the entire manual.
The one rule that applies to every rubber-based mat, cork or not: keep it out of direct sunlight when you are not using it. UV is the only thing that reliably kills natural rubber.

Quick answers
Is cork better than natural rubber for a yoga mat? They are not really rivals. Natural rubber is the best base; cork is a surface that goes on top of it. If you mean a solid rubber mat versus a cork-topped one: cork wins when you sweat, rubber wins when you are dry.
Are cork yoga mats good for hot yoga? They are arguably the best surface for it. Grip increases with sweat, and the antimicrobial surface handles the aftermath.
Do cork mats get slippery? Dry cork is moderately grippy; damp cork is very grippy. If your practice is fast and completely dry, spray the surface lightly before you start.
Do cork yoga mats shed or crumble? Cheap ones can, where a thin cork veneer is bonded to a backing with too little support. A dense cork layer and a reinforcing mesh between cork and rubber prevent it. Ask what is under the cork.
How long does a cork mat last? The cork surface wears gracefully and the natural rubber base is dense and durable. Treated decently, years. It ages, it does not die.
Can I use a cork mat if I have a latex allergy? Not if it has a natural rubber base, which most do. The cork surface does not shield you from the rubber underneath.
How do I clean a cork yoga mat? Damp cloth, gentle natural cleaner, dry in the shade. No soaking, no washing machine, no direct sun.
